You know, it’s been a minute. I’ve for sure been writing. I’ve worked on my book, did a lot of reading and got destroyed at work during thunderstorm season. It’s amazing what that does in terms of distracting from one’s goals.
Last year I set a goal to write at least once a month. You know what happened? I wrote a ton for a solid four months. From June to September I was writing nearly daily, well exceeding my weekly goal. The trouble is, I over did it.
They always say, if you eat your favorite meal for every meal you’ll eventually get sick of it. I felt that, not being sick of it as much as not being sure about what’s in my back log. As I opened up my blog folder I had about 15-20 blogs that had either been written completely, just started, or held an idea for a future blog. I chucked it all in a folder, because let’s be honest everything I looked at it all I got overwhelmed and said “I’ll figure out where I left off tomorrow”. Here we are nearly a year from when my writing tapered off finally realizing I’ll never start where I left off. I just have to begin the race again.
I enjoy writing immensely, but I’m plagued with the ease of watching entertaining media and to be completely honest the joy of consuming a story someone else has written. I like to pull things apart and wonder how I myself would have written the story. Do I think it could have ended better? Can I make my own characters have such three dimensional depth?
Consuming media; whether by book, music, or visual media, can be absolutely essential to story telling, but unlike writing, there’s no such thing as a media block. You can’t consume it all. Where one TV show ends a new one begins, sometimes in live action.
So, I reach my hand onto the wall of media and lift myself onto the other side. Will I be back again, I don’t doubt it, but I presume I will find myself climbing the wall to do what I truly enjoy. Writing.
